D-17 Generator Smokes

I just put a new gen. on my d-17 and it started smoking and getting hot. i tested the wires and their is power coming to the gen. through the gen. wire and the gen tab on the voltage regulator has power to. what could be the problem? i think that the voltage regulator is shot.

if the voltage regulator is failed (contacts closed) the generator could go to full voltage and full amp output. at that point it will get hot and like you say, probably start to smoke after several minutes. do you have a amp meter or voltage meter in the circuit to monitor? you need to have at least one to see what is going on. generator is probably o.k. if you get the voltage reg working / replaced.
