The first thing I would do is to check the compression. If you check this and the compression is down it will save you a lot of tinkering that don't help. Bad rings or valves can't be overcome by any amount of tuneups.

Thanks Dick, You have help me in the past. I will check the compression. This tractor has not been started in a couple of years and I know better than to pull her out and expect her to run good. The old tractor has always run good in years past pulling a brush hog. I hoping that a full tune up (wires, plugs and points will bring her back to her old self. Do you think it's possible that setting could have stuck the rings and they might need to re-seat? This tractor has never snoked abit and does not now.

I somehow got the idea that you were trying to increase the HP of a running tractor that was in use. Sure a good place to start if the tractor has been stored inside would be to check the magneto for a strong spark and then put in a new set of plugs. I would file the points and reset the gap to .020 if they look good and not change them untill after it seemed they might be failing. If it had the proper plug wires with wire cores then they would probly be fime if as I stated it was stored inside. If it was stored outside all bets are off. Even if the rings are not stuck you will have a very low compression after setting for a long time. You would want to put a coupla three table spoons of motor oil in each plug hole and let the engine spin over a short while and the add a little more before taking a compression test. If the compression is in the 60 70 psi range and even from cylinder to cylinder you should not have a problem pulling a bush hog.

If it has set with gas in the tank for a year or two you could have bad gas. The gas now can go bad in a few months. try draining it all out and putting in a few gallons of fresh gas and see how it runs. The tractor pullers around here have to drain out the gas that sat all winter in the spring, or run it out before the tractor will run good sometimes.

Bill: It is running like a top. It was all in the fuel. Not only cleaning the whole fuel system but in adjustment. I did clean plugs and cleaned contacts to starter, battery and replaced some bad wiring. At least yesterday the "weeds" got their lunch. Hope it keeps running so good.
Thanks to Tom's help. Oh, I also put a new fuel filter on that had a extension into the gas tank that would stop particles from coming directly into the system. Rust is always a problem, it seems.

Start with the check list above and do a compression. Low compression low HP. As the compression goes up, so goes the HP. If the compression is good on the check look at the carb and fuel flow again. You might want to check the timing with a light but if it starts and sounds good it probly aint to far off.

Dick: Compression was fine. Fuel was the problem. Maybe along with some wiring problems. Ran like a top yesterday. Thanks for the help.
