My son removed the spark plug wires to replace them...guess what? I need to know which cyl. is number one and which is #1 spot on the distributor.

Also...what is the "torque housing" on which the serial number is located? Thanks.

Torque housing is the casting immediately rearward of the engine. The engine is bolted to it. The D17 serial number is on the left side, upper face of the torque housing, begins with D17-. Do not confuse it with the engine serial number, which is on the left side of the engine, rearward of the carburetor.

Number 1 cylinder is the one closest to the radiator. Firing order is 1243. Bring number 1 cylinder up to top center on compression stroke. Remove distributor cap and see what tower the rotor is pointing to. Put number 1 cylinder spark plug wire in that tower. Install spark plug wires for cylinders 243 in the next 3 towers clockwise from number 1.
