I have a 1951 WD that is making a moan in the rearend. I know that year of WD has the straight gears, so I know it does moan some. In listening to other WD's about the same year, my tractor moans a lot louder than others. Could anyone give me ideas on what else to look for as the problem and how hard is it to fix things in the rearend?
The tractor pulls great but the more weight you are pulling, the louder the noise. Also if your going up hill it gets louder than going down hill. The tractor only makes the noise when there is power to the rearend, but it quiets down when you press in on the clutch and it is still rolling but no power to the rearend. Thanks for any help!

I remember several WD's (the ones with the straight shifter & spur gears inside) having a whining noise inside them. As long as they had good oil in them , they never gave us a bit of problems.

My 49 WD makes a singing noise in 4th gear unless oil level is absolutely full. Then it's OK. Been like that since it was new as far as I can remember. Works fine singing or not.

The noise you are hearing is likely a hamonic vibration caused by the straight cut gears. I grew up driving 2 different wds, both had a whining sound in the tranny. For some reason one tractor was always noisier than the other. Neither one ever had any transmission problems over a couple decades. Dad always called second gear, singing gear. Brian

Well if it was the straight cut gears in the transmission it would probably make different noise in different gears. Does the noise sound like it is from the transmission or rear end? If it is the rear end you can look in the back by removeing the cover on the back and looking at the concition of the gears. I don't think you can see enough of the bearings on each side of the differentiol to tell about them though. As was said, first check the oil for water and proper level. If it is old and black, chang it anyway. Also, what about the final drives? Have you check, and or changed the oil in them? Could the noise be from one of both of them?

Have you checked the gear oil to see if it is full and if it has water or not. This will cause some noise.

Has it always done that? When I was a youngster, my Dad bought a '49 WD that also had a noise in either second or third (I don't remember which). Many years later, the mechanic whow worked on it before we bought it said that he had changed one of the transmission gears because it had been torn up. I suspect that the whine was because a new gear against a used gear invariably will be mismatched and make noise. Just a possibility.
