I just brought home a D-17. the "torque Housing # is 67998. That is Ser III. But the rest of the tractor is early, tin, muffler, lights. It also jumps out of 3rd. I like this tractor but how do I fix this and what is the differences in all 4 series?

I am not a "17" guy, but they were related to 45s so maybe had the same type of transmission. If so I don't think there is anything impossible about getting into it and replacing the parts. These are "constant mesh" transmissions, the parts that are worn are "dogs" on the side of the gear and the "dog" that engages the gear and transfers power to the shaft. If you can find the parts and are up for it, with a manual, and some time and patience you can probably do it if you are a mechanical type. Ask questions here for details, someone will know more about D-17s.

I also had a D17 that jumped out of 3rd gear.I was quoted $1600 to fix it. The mechanic at Agco-Allis told me the tractor had to be split in order to access the bad parts. Total parts and labor estimated to be around $1600. I did not have it done but sold the tractor instead. AC had several models that had this problem. I have another D17 series 1 that has no transmission problems at all.

Today's Featured Article - On the Road with Dave Gohl: Deere Departed Friend - by Dave Gohl. Have you ever had to part with a dear friend? It's not easy. If it's due to death, your feelings could be in disarray for days, months or even years. Even now after almost 4 years, I still miss my dad. I remember when I was a kid my dad sometimes would tuck my brother and I in at night and we would ask him questions about his childhood on the farm. To this day, it's some of the best stories I've ever heard. And now, I'm so glad that I asked those questions, and if I were a little smarter i ... [Read Article]
