I replaced the weights and reassembled the governor to the tractor last night. The throttle still goes to full open when I start it up. The only way to throttle it down is to pull the linkage back that connects to the carb. Any ideas?

I just wanted to follow-up to anyone reading this post. I have been chasing problems with my governor since I replaced the weights. At the advise of another reader here, I finally solved my problem by bending the vertical part of the cross shaft until the carb lever lined up with the vetical shaft hole. I know I should not have to bend parts to get them to work, but it fixed the problem immediately and my tractor runs great. Just thought I would drop that in. Thanks to everyone for all of their help.

I believe that in a prior post you said you had parts books and manuals? Are you sure that you got all of the parts back in the governor? The reason for asking is there is not any mysteries or magic in that governor and not that many parts either. The spring opens the throttle butterfly and when the weights reach an RPM that overcomes the spring they close the butterfly. But the mechanical parts must be in a position allow this to happen. Did the weights pivot freely on the hub? Is the bearing and collar that runs against the weights and activates the fork on the cross shaft in good condition and all there? It is possible that when the weights flew off they bent the fork or sheared the pin that attaches it to the cross shaft or bent the cross shaft thus making it mechanically impossible for the governor to close the butterfly as the fork is too far away from the bearing.

I have three different manuals and the dealer gave me an exploded view. It is quite possible though, that the fork is bent as I took the front of the governor apart to watch it while the tractor is running and it did not appear to be making contact with the bearing. I just wonder if there is a spring somewhere that I am missing. I do not see any in any of the parts manuals, other than the one that puts drag on the linkage that runs back to the carb. Mine does not have that. Can that fork be bent back or does it need to be replaced?

OK I am not sitting beside a tractor so bear with me a bit. Over on the left side of the engine, the link that attaches the the governor shaft arm to the carburetor moves towards the rear to be at idle correct? If it goes the other way reverse the directions of travel in my directions. Place the throttle control above idle a bitand remove the link from one end or the other. The front end would probaly be easier. Pull the link going to the carb foreward to the wide open butterfly position. Then pull the governor arm foreword as far as it will go. The hole in the governor arm should be just a bit forward of the rod coming from the carb. If not then something is bent or broken in the cross shaft and fork.

Hey Butch or Bob,

I have a different issue with my wd (6 v magneto yet). My tractor wants to throttle down all the time, have to keep hand on throttle lever to keep open. Slides up to about half throttle on it's own. Also, tractor was running great but, after plowing some it developed a miss and slight flutter. Do these tractors get out of time easily?

Thanks so much Butch. I read that in one of the manuals I have here but I have not had time to study it in any detail yet. Reading your explanation is very clear and I understand now how to adjust the linkage. I will let you know how this turns out.
