i looked at a ac tractor the owner thought it was a B or C im havei little trouble with looking the number up. the number is C48065 is it safe to asume that it is a C tractor and if so produced around 1947? thank you for any help.

C48xxx is a 1947 C. to expand on the other comments. ALL "B" are wide front end, have the arm on the steering box pointing striaght down, and have the steering rod going to the left front wheel.----"C" can be narrow front or wide front ends. The arm on the C steering box points up, and the rod goes to an arm under the radiator. --- Both tractors share the same radiator, motor, transmission, hydraulics, pto, and rear wheels. The C is actually 12 inches wider in the rear axle and housing than the B.

Dear Jesse;

Telling a B from a C is real easy--Cs had dual front wheels! All of them except cotton specials or the like. ALL Bs had wide fronts. CAs had wide and dual front wheels, but CAs had power-shift rear wheels where Bs and Cs did not. The serial number is on a machined pad beside the shifter. 48065 is definitely a 1947 Model C. If the tractor has a wide front end, that number makes it a 1940 Model B.

I think what you meant to say is that MOST Cs are tricycle front, either dual or single wheel, except those with the adjustable square tube wide front axle.
All Bs are wide front, period. They have either the arched wide front axle, either fixed or adjustable, or the adjustable square tube wide front axle, same as used on the C.
The serial number of the tractor in question makes it a C.
The other defining charachteristic of the C is the wider rear wheel spacing. The stub axles are longer which puts the rear wheels about a foot farther apart than the B. This is how A-C made a one row tractor into a two row tractor without a major redesign. A simple and elegant solution to the engineering problem.
