How can you tell the difference between the WD and WD45 tractor? I cannot find the serial no. on my tractor but do have a motor no. WD 301495 PA. Thanks

Dear Benny;

There are several almost sure-fire ways to tell a WD from a WD45, the most obvious being the shifter. Most WDs had a straight shifter handle--the 45s were curved. In 1952 A-C started putting the new transmission with the curved shifter in the WDs, and since WD production stopped in 1953 and the WD45 began, few WDs had those transmissions. Also, few WDs had distributors, for A-C switched from magnetos in 1953. All WD45s had distributors. In addition, all WD45s had the Snap-Coupler bell. You can find your serial number on a flat machined pad beside the inspection plate on the rear axle above the pto guard. The first WD45 serial number was 146607, so anything over that number is definitely a WD45. Hope this helps.

The serial number of the tractor is the final determination of the tractor model. If the tractor has a straight shift lever, it is a WD. If it is curved, it could be a late '53 WD or a WD45. All WD45's had NO cover on the right side of the engine. Decals don't mean squat!- anybody can stick them on, but it does not change what the tractor is. If you bought a Ford car with an Impala insignia on it, would that make it a Chevy? The serial number on a WD or WD45 is in the same place: Left side of the differential, rear face of it, just below the metal cover of the brake assembly, and above the hole that the brake spring is hooked in to.

L.HUD GAVE THE QUICKEST WAY TO I.D. A W.D. BY LOOKING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BLOCK. IF THERE IS AN INSPECTION PLATE IT IS A WD. NONE THERE IT IS A WD45. I HAD A WD45D ENGINE GO BAD ONE TIME AND I REPLACED IT WITH A WD ENGINE AND EVENTUALLY SOLD IT AND HAD SEVERAL LOOKERS COMMENT ON THE PLATE ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK.

Benny, Assuming the engine is original to the tractor, that is a 1951 A-C WD with a "high compression" engine mean to burn Gasoline. I have my Dad's which has engine # WD309267PA and is also a 1951.

Open it up about 1/2 throttle and snap the throttle back to idle- a 45 will have a Heavy -harty backfire!

WD-45 engine had 1/2 in more stroke and head much deeper on the 45 engine. Look at spark plug opening If about 3 in high, it's a 45; If shorter- a WD. WD-45 vs WD engines 226 cu in vs. 200. Can also tell from looking at the manifold-45's deeper throat & huskier exhaust manifold. Most 45's had 13 in rims and 14.9 tires( back then the old 13-28 which are now 14.9-28's). Lift arm latches heavier on the 45's. Taller grill and radiator. Many more suttle changes. WD's fast low gear; 45's low not quite as fast; $th faster on 45's than wd's. 45's tranny syncro-mesh; totally different feel in the shifting; could go on.

Last year WD's had helical (curved) shifters installed when they ran out of straight ones. Serial number is on left differential 2 to 3 inches below brake plate cover. MY 53 WD has the curved shifter. The only replacement shifter available is the curved one.

Well mine is either a 52 or a 53... Can't recall. But when my dad was driving it he broke a pin in the curved shifter, and rather than get a new one... We cut the old one down and bored new holes for the gearing in it, and now we have a straight shifter. It's a little short, but it works like a charm!

IF YOUR DAD BROKE THE SHIFTER AT THE PIN AND REDRILLED IT, IT WOULD STILL BE CURVED, SINCE THE CURVE IS AT THE TOP OF THE SHIFTER. WOULD BE SHORTER. BOB

Ahhh, but it isn't. The shifter is good to be any more than a foot long now... Maybe a foot and a half at best. It's no longer curved.

A good general rule of thumb is that the 45 will have a curved gear shift. A WD will have a straight gear shift. The 45 engine has no side plate on the engine where a WD engine does. Hope this helps.

But that is what irks me... My AC tractor says "WD" on the decal. My other grandpa's tractors both say "WD" on the decals. My grandpa's OTHER tractor says "WD-45" on the decal.

Three of the four tractors have crooked gear shifts. Three of the four tractors will pull a three bottom plow. The one with a straight gear shift will only pull a two.

What's the deal!?

Decals mean NOTHING! The post above is accurate. The only note is that the curved shifer was available on late model WD's. Here's the sure fire way to tell:
Stand behind tractor. Look at rear axle. Just to the left of the pumpkin, there's a flat spot. Probably covered in 12 layers of paint. Get the serial #. WD146607 up is a WD45. Below is a WD.
