I've acquired my grandfather's old WD tractor (it looks just like a WD-45 really, since it doesn't have the usual WD straight gear shift, it has the 45's crooked one and it has the power to pull a three bottom plow instead of a two) [1952]. After some working on it, and a cleaning of the carbereator, it will now run again. The problem is, he set the tires all the way in so he could plow with it. I'd like the tires set out to the middle or all the way out so that I can mow with it on hillsides and have a little more stability with it.

Also, any way to adjust the seat? I know it'll always ride hard, but I'm a rather tall person and my legs ride up right under the steering wheel.

Also looking to convert it from a 6 volt to a 12 volt (since 8 volts just won't cut it either). Has this worked for anybody here? The starter seems pretty weak, since it'll turn over but the engine won't catch. But if you pull it even just 2 feet it'll start right off. Bad starter perhaps?

Plus the hydaulic lift arms are stuck in the up position. Any way to get the cylinders to release it? Or do I need to have a mechanic work on it?

Finally, are there any good places to order parts for it? Like oil filters, exaust pipe/muffler, sediment bulbs, decals?

What you really need is a manual. It will help you so much. A reprint of the original is best if you can find one. As for the brakes, it will tell you about them too. It won't tell you how to remove the pins in the bottom that hold the shoes in, that is if you need to replace the brakes. It can be a job. If you need to do it ask again. If they are really stuck basically I think the best way is to drill and tap the pin for a stud or capscrew to pull them with. Ask for details if you need to.

Well I do have a manual for a WD-45... It is a reprint yes. I'm sure I could dig up my grandpa's WD manual from somewhere if I tried hard enough. I'll take a look at it. They aren't stuck, but they just are weak and don't hold worth a darn.


The clutch gets stuck when you push it more than halfway too, if there's a quick fix for it?

about the electrics, i sent you a diagram for a 12 volt generator and a 12 volt alternator. alternator is cheaper, but not as original looking if that is important. decide what you want to do, and ask for details.

Reminds me of something my grandfather would've done. (^_^)

Actually, if you just pull back the hand clutch really fast while it's in gear it'll jump regardless. With a little throttle your tires will spin on gravel.

As far as moving the wheels out. Good Luck. AC had a rust problem with the power adjust clamps, and it is a miracle if they will release to let you adjust the wheels. Our solution to this problem is to remove the tire first, then remove the clamp bolts that hold them to the center of the wheel, knock the center out with a large hammer, soak the clamps in cemdip for a few days, soak in solvent for a few more days, then heat the clamps while trying to turn the lock bolt with a impact wrench, then sand blast the clamps. Allrighty. I think I may be able to get the bolts to move, since my grandpa used to spin his tires out frequently to go from plowing to mowing. If I can't get them to spin, I'll try your method.

Is the tractor more stable/easier to drive in a middle setting or an all the way out setting?

It is more stable all the way out, but easier to get around set in, you have to balance one against the other. Wish you luck with the wheels. Tim

I take it the wider the base, doesn't make the tractor have any unnecessary stress on the back axle? I'll problem spin them half way, so it doesn't feel awkward to drive.

Will I be able to make it on hillsides with the tires all the way in if I watch myself?

Tyler half way out is a good setting for them. My advice is to learn the capabilities of both you and the tractor before you get on too steep of a hill. Myself I use a tricycle Super M with a front end loader loading round bales, but it took me a few times to not bail off when it started to lean, just be careful and use common sense. Tim

About the wheels... Use the wrench that came with the tractor, or a darned Good one, and loosten the eccentics, the top one first..it will be the easiest.. use some penetrating oil on them, and where the rail goes.. Take the rail-locks off...one on each wheel..
Put it back IN, where you want the wheel to be set. Get on..hold ONE brake and put it in either 1st or reverse, and one wheel will move in or out.. Best to set one wheel at a time..

There are 2 covers on the top of the differential housing..one is under the seat mount. Take them off, and you will see the adjustment.. Does it have a power kit in it.?? With the power kit, you will have trouble starting with 6 Volts.. Is there a "Transport Valve" at the rear and under the seat..?? If this is set wrong, it could keep the lift arms up.. Only one thumb-screw on it.. Our WD-45's always pulled 4-14" semi-mounted plows, and I mean a Full 7" Deep, too..

I don't think it's got a power kit. But as far as I can remember my grandpa told me when I was younger that it had always been a hard start. My other grandpa just used 8 volt batteries in his tractor. But this one only starts if you pull it, it seems. Which isn't good when I don't have another tractor to pull it with - so I'm trying to do the 12 volt conversion.

I know the 2 covers you speak of, but am not sure of the valve. I'll give it a look next time I am out at the shed.

I put a 12Volt battery in mine, and used a ford Alternater and regulator... A "one-wire" alternater would be nice... 12Volts Does spin it real good--even in the cold part of the winter..!

Mine would not spin on 6 Volts..at ALL...just ONE cylinder per Bump of the starter..!! I have a D-17 Power kit in it, and the 7.4:1 Compression won't let it spin on 6V.. On 12 V, it spins real good--Every time..!!

Well we hooked up a 12 volt battery charger to the connectors on the tractor, and let the power flow... And by gosh it almost started up. I think the starter needs fixed myself.

ONE THING THAT IS USUALLY OVERLOOKED IS THE BUILDUP OF RUST BEHIND THE GROUND TREMINAL WHERE THE CABLE ATTACHES TO THE FRAME. REMOVE AND CLEAN TO BARE METAL. ALSO REMOVE THE STARTER AND CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THE HOLE AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE STARTER, THE PART THAT GOES INTO THE HOLE. THIS WILL HELP THE STARTER WORK BETTER.
ALSO REMOVE AND CLEAN THE BATTERY CABLE CLAMPS AND THE POSTS ON THE BATTERY. BOB

I took some of the corrosion off the starter, as well as recrimped some wires and I did work on the battery cables and clamps. I'll check about cleaning the starter some more.

Also need some advice on how to wire my other grandfather's tractor... He uses an 8 volt battery, and the bulbs always burn out for his lights. Any way to fix this without returning to a 6 volt or converting to a 12 volt?

Just last week I converted my WD to 12volt with a distribetor. It was easy and I not very handy with those things. Call Andy at Genesee Products at 918-274-8000. He'll help you out. They got all you need. Check out the "Unoffical Allis Home Page"

Okay, final question before I go to bed (can't sleep worrying about working on the tractor)...

The brakes are loose. They do good to hold me on the level... Is there any way to tighten them up; or do I have to get them replaced... And is there any easy way to do-it-yourself on a brake fixing?
