hydrolics question for model b

I have a problem with the hydro pump on my allis b. It has up and down but it like stutters going up and doesen't hold when up. To hold plow up I would have the pto on all the time right? This is how I do it now. I have to run it up every so often to hold it up. I think there are adjustments for the pump but I'm not sure. Could any one help. Thanks ed.

The hydraulics SHOULD be able to hold the plow up without the tractor running. In theory at least. Sounds like you have wear in the relief valve or in the valve control. One of mine does what you describe. I rebuilt the relief valve and had to make a piece that keeps the valve control rod pushed into the pump body. Still sinks after a while with the pump off. Stays up when the pump is running now though. The pump is not all that hard to work on. Get an Allis Chalmers Service manual. It has a good section on the hydraulic pumps.
