I have purchased an allis chalmers tractor and I cannot find a serial number like the ones listed in most books. I could not find a number on the rear face of the transmission however, I did find a number on the top of the left brake axle housing. That number is A1Z442 A serial number at this location would seem to make it a WD-45 however, this number doesn't look the numbers listed for this model.Perhaps someone can tell me if this number is in some kind of code.

that is a casting number, not a model. the serial number always contains the model number. --for basics, if it has 24 inch rear wheels and no frame around the engine it is probalby a B,C,CA and the serial number is on the transmission by the shift lever. If it has 28 inch wheels it is probably a WC,WD,WD45 built in 1935-55 with a C-channel around the motor and radiator, and 28 inch rear wheels. serial number is on the rear alxe, later models on the left brake cover area, and earlier numbers on the center of the axle on a flat boss area. Some time you have to get 5 layers of paint off to see it.
---- If the tractor was built after 1958 it could be a D series and the serial number is on the left side on theclutch bell housing, just behind the motor bolts. The smaller D series, lD14 and 15 had 26 inch wheels, the D17 had 28 inch. IF you send me an e-mail i will give you 3-4 pictures to compare and you can see what unit you have.
