Used vertical mill - 2,500
used surface grinder - 2,000
used head - 100
valves seats - 100
doing it right the first time - priceless
I am not a machinist, but have a buddy who is, so I get a big break, just buy the beer afterwards, but he has alot of time and knowledge doing this, and it seems high until a person realizes what is all involved, 400 is about average, as long as it is a good job.

I just got a D-17 head back from the machine shop. it has all new valves, guides and it was surfaced, no seats needed. the cost was $240.00
the D-17 head is basicly the same head as the WC or WD head

Well, I hope the more knowledgeable members respond, but that does not seem too bad in my opinion. I had my WD head rebuilt last year, and the machine shop had to do a little more work--they had to shave the head a little, put in new guides and new valves, and it cost me $650.

I don't know the major difference between a WC and WD head though, so like I said, I hope you get more responses from the more experienced users on the list. I am fairly new to AC's myself--I bought a WD last year, and just recently purchased a D 17.

the problem is when you pay a shop to do engine work you are paying about $40-50 per hour. If you figure it took the guy all day to do the head, or an hour or so for each seat to cutout and put the new one in, plus extras, you are looking at $400. sounds high when you first say it, but if you figure the time involved, you see wht the real cost is. this is not a cheap hobby.
