Auction This Weekend-Any Advice?

I am looking at several tractors and brands.

JD 2020
MF 65
AC D19
AC D17
JD 620

Tractor to be used mainly for mowing, running auger, light utility work.

I am not going to decide which one or two are targets till I get to the auction and look them over.

For you Allis expertss what should I look for in regards to problem areas in the D17 & D19?

D-17 is bigger than a MF65 I own both and prefer the D-17 the MF65 is rated at 48 hp and 41 hp pto the D17 is like 55 horse and 48 hp pto I would sell the 65 for 3200

The D17 would be a good size for you, but the D19's seem to going on the cheap side lately, so you might get the D19 for less money than the D17. Both of these models were available in a diesel version, and they are the ones that have had some head problems if over worked or abused, but the gas counterparts were very reliable. The D19 will gobble gas at a pretty good rate if worked hard, but isn't as bad for light use. D17 series I's and series II's will go for $1500-$3000, and go up in price for series III's or series IV's, with series IV's bringing in the area of $5000. There was only one series of D19 built, so they are all the same, and they will bring around what the series I and series II D17's.

My budget is only about $4,500-$5,000 so hopefully one of them will be decent and go cheap.

The advise I'd have is set an upper limit for each prior to bidding and stick to it. Remember there are always tractors for sale and more at the next auction. Last week I was at an auction and a '49 Ferg. TO-20 SN:10095 went for a very high $3250.00. Good shape and ran for 20 seconds well before thy shut it down. I was at an auction in Feb and a Ferg TO-30 went for $1575. More tractor 1/2 the cost.

Stick to your price and if the bidding goes by you then be happy that there is another out there.

For what you describe, you don't need a D19. The D17 and 2020 would fit your usage. D17 is more than enough for mowing, auger, utility work. Check the hand clutch on the D17, especially high (forward) range. It should have a good 'snap' to it- more than the rear range, because forward range is used more often, and will wear out sooner. D19s had a reputation for head problems. 620 JD was good in many ways, but not a real handy tractor for the beginner. MF 65 is maybe more than you need- between D17 and D19? I grew up with AC, farmed with AC and JD last 30 years- like both, but for the hobby farmer, am partial to the WD45, D series, early New Generation JD. Don't like the 10 series because of the synchro tranny- cheaper to buy, bummer (and other b word) to shift)- but farm with the 20, 30, 40, 50 series Powershift tractors. Otherwise, I would go back to AC.

If they are series 3 they are pretty good but I've heard that the series 1 and 2s had problems. But thats only what I have heard I don't know it first hand
