I have a 1944 Allis Chalmers C. The hydraulic pump does not work, nor do I know how to work it. The PTO works just fine. Outside the pump there is one hydraulic ram but, it has no return to the pump. Does this ram push only one way? What can I do to figure out what is wrong with the pump? Are there any fluids that I need to add to the pump to make it work (i.e. hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid), and if so where do I add them? I am not familiar with this system. When I bought the tractor it had cultivators on the back that were to be raised by hand. Can the hydraulics be used to raise the cultivators? Can this system be used with other implements such as a mower (either hydraulics or by hand)? Thank You for Any Information at all!!! I very much appreciate it, as I know nothing at all about this entire system.

YES, THE RAM ONLY LIFTS. GOES DOWN BY WEIGHT.
YOU CHECK THE FLUID IN FRONT OF THE REAR AXLE HOUSING. THE TRANS, DIFF, AND PTO USE THE SAME FLUID. THE PTO MUST BE INGAGED TO OPERATE THE LIFT. THE LEVER NEXT TO THE RIGHT FENDER ACTIVATES THE PUMP, PULL UP TO LIFT, PUSH DOWN TO LOWER. IT IS SPRING LOADED AND WHEN RELEASED AFTER LIFTING IT WILL HOLD THE IMPLEMENT UP UNTIL YOU PUSH IT INTO THE DOWNWARD POSITION. YOU CAN USE THE LIFT TO RAISE PLOWS, CULTIVATORS, AND MOWERS ETC WITH THE PROPER ATTACHMENTS LOL BOB

What bryan said is true, and yew you can use it for a cultivator and mower. It is a one way system, and the manual lift can be converted to hydraulic.

Yes, I know that the PTO must be engaged, but does the ram push out or pull in? Can the hydraulic pump be used on a two way ram that both pushes out and pulls in?

OK JOE; PAY ATTENTION, THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM ON YOUR A.C.IS A HIGH PRESSURE, ONE WAY SYSTEM. THE HYD. CYL. WORKS ON THE PUSH ONLY.P.T.O. MUST BE ENGAGED. A HYDRAULIC LIFT SYSTEM CAN BE INSTALLED BUT SOME METHOD OF DOWN FORCE CONTROL OF THE IMPLEMENT MUST BE USED AS THE SYSTEM WILL LIFT ONLY. YOU WANT TWO WAY LOW PRESSURE INSTALL A SEPERATE HYD.SYSTEM SUCH AS A CHARLAIN PUMP WHICH RUNS OFF THE PTO. AND HAS IT'S OWN OIL SUPPLY AND VALVING. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.
