I have a model B with woods belly mower. I have used this tractor for many years, two years ago i started having problems. The tractor runs great at all times, but then all the sudden while mowing it will start to spit sputter and damnere die, and then, like nothing was wrong it will take of and run perfect??? this will happen at any given time, just out of the blue. I'm a mechanic by trade and am still stumped. Last year I rebuilt the carb and know its working o.k., I had the head redone and checked, it's o.k., send the mag. off and had it rebuilt. one thing i don't know about is the mag. Could I be having mag problems or what, my expereince tells me i am losing ignition when this problem occurs. Is this an internal mag problem or whats happening??? Help. Thanks for info

I had the EXACT thing happen to my 1940 B albeit with a 5X5 FMC pull mower. Turned out to be the oil seal in the back of the F-M mag. This was defective and would let a little hot oil through, just enough to gum up the points. I ended up having the mag case machined for a modern-type oil seal. Works perfect now...

Ryan,
You could be on the right track with your mag theory. If it's a "J" series Fairbanks mag, (two piece lower cover & cap) one of the quirks that Fairbanks had with the early "J" series was the tar taped coil they came with. After a while, these would start to "leak" and intermittantly ground themselves out to the mag housing or drive bearing. Fairbanks corrected this problem later on by replacing the old tar taped coil with an Epoxy type coated coil. We service and rebuild the F/M mags, if you would like to send it out to us for testing. Steve, I'm not sure what type of fairbanks mag I got, but I do need to have it checked. If that is possible? Like I said, it will run fine for awhile and then act up, so I don't know if its something you would be able to tell right off the bat?? Anyway, I would like to get your phone#, if possible. Had that same thing happen with an Oliver 66 when I was mowing hay. Drove me up a wall. I was sure it was a fuel plug somewhere. I would take the sediment bowl off out in the field and gas would run out full stream. Took it off the last time and noticed that the fuel was running out quite well but seemed to not run straight down, kinda wanted to go sidways a little. Took the tank off when I had time and found a coin in the tank.

I have a 53 B that had similar problems. It was the mag. It would run good until it got warm, and then it would skip and act like it was not getting fuel. Had mag reworked and it now runs perfectly.

I have a 39 B that also had similar problem. This problem was with the carb. It was a new carb. The problem was the float valve. The new ones are rubber tipped, and they tend to stick. They will stick both open & closed. It would run until it ran the fuel out of the bowl and then die. After waiting a few minutes, and a few raps on the carb with a metal object, it would start and run for a while and then stop. I finally quit turning off the fuel when it was not running, and it now runs perfectly. It must be the float valve was drying out and this caused it to stick closed. Hope this helps. It also helps to have the floate set at the correct level. Tom Davison

Thanks for the responce Tom. I'm an east central indiana native, is there anyone you would recommend I send the mag to? It is a 1938 B, and I'm almost sure it is an ignition problem by the way it runs perfect and then drops dead at the snap of a finger(like a light switch to the mag). As quick as it snaps off it snaps right back on,but never does fully die, and runs perfect.?
