D 17 Hand Clutch

I just recently purchased a 1962 D 17. I am not certain how the hand clutch is supposed to work on these?

When I have it in any forward gear, and put the hand clutch in nuetral, the tractor just keeps moving forward. I can stop it with the brakes, but I am not certain if that is the way it is supposed to work?

It does stop in Reverse if I put the hand clutch in nuetral, but not in forward.

They're that way by design- if you adjust it out enough so there's no creep, you're going to get slippage under heavy load when its fully engaged. I remember baling with a D-15 in my youth, and you had to keep the brake on while PTO engaged, then release foot brake and let it creep, if you wanted to go real slow through a heavy spot.

I just bought a 1963 D17 last Nov. I was told it would work just as you describe. I've used the tractor and actually found it helpful when using the loader to move some dirt. As the tractor inched into the dirt pile with the hand clutch in the center position, I was raising the loader until I was in the pile far enough. Then I just stepped on the brakes while the loader continued to raise. Pretty slick.

I haven't had any experience with a D-17, but a 45 and WD are similar in that they have a multi plate wet clutch. the oil gets between the clutch plates and causes them to drag. It will be less when the oil warms up. Shift into gear with the foot clutch, then you can stop the tractor with the hand clutch. Maybe when the oil gets warm you can use the hand clutch for a shift too. You could try "tractor lube" in the transmission to aid shifting as it is thinner than transmission fluid.

It is normal to have a bit of creep with the hand clutch. It was designed to provide live power to the pto and hydraulics, not necessarily to completely stop the tractor.
