Got the WD45 running (with the choke in!)

Hey folks. Thanks to your many suggestions, I was able to get the engine running pretty well after only about 15 minutes of tinkering. Using the load screw and idle screw, I adjusted the carb until I could push the choke in 1/4 inch, and it stayed running. Then I pushed the choke a little further, and it began to lope very badly. But I adjusted the screws more and it smoothed out - I kept pushing the choke in and adjusting until finally the choke was all the way open and the engine didn't die. It didn't run great, but it stayed running.

I drove it around the yard some with the choke all the way in and it's very low on power, so I have more adjustments to make. But I feel like I'm in the homestretch now.

It has a serious surge at idle, which I'm sure is just an adjustment. I might check to see if the points are clean and adjusted properly. Everything looks good in the distributor cap.

It was in the 60's yesterday but only in the 30's today (southern Indiana - yee ha) so I'm not inclined to go out to mess with it today, plus we had a foal born two nights ago (12:30 am of course) and I haven't caught up on my sleep yet.

The surge at idle is probably the idle adjusting screw so I'll mess with that and let you all know how it does.

Now I'm actually thinking about getting a grader blade and thinking of some of the things I can do with the tractor once I get it running right (I used it for bush hogging before it started running poorly). Thanks very much for all your help!

Any suggestions on the surge would be appreciated.

Vic,
send me your e-mail to davesami@earthlink.net and I'll get a photo off to you showing where the anti-surge spring is located. It;s pretty simple, one end hooked to the engine coolant drain cock (behind the generator and the other to the throttle linkage at the carb, hooked so it pulls the throttle in the closed position. Any medium spring will work.

Dave, I sent you an email but got an automated response back. My computer is so eaten up with homepage hijackers and other internet junk that I don't click on the automated messages anymore. My email is (remove the *nospam*) vlovejoy@*nospam*hsonline.net

Thanks very much for the info and the pic. I'm going to set the valves tomorrow (gulp) to see how that goes. If I'm in over my head I'll just carefully put it back together and come here for advice. I've done valves before on diesel engines so I can probably do this.

I'm looking forward to the pic so I can get the surge out, and I should be ready to bush hog as soon as the grass grows.

Thanks very much.

The surge is usually simply the governer "hunting" That is the reason for the anti surge spring, keeps tension on the throttle and dampens the governer hunt. The anti surge spring is an original part of the engine and came from the factory with them. I'll e-mail you some photos of the hook up and spring.

I am having the same problem with my WD45 surging at LI. I was thinking that there might be a spring missing. If you still have the picture of the antisurge spring could you forward it to me also. Thanks, Vance

Regarding the surge problem- do you have an anti-surge spring on the throttle shaft? It hooks to the draincock on the left side of the engine.

That's a new one on me - a spring attached to the throttle? Does it go on the same hole in the lever that the throttle rod goes into?

I haven't looked at the throttle shaft lever (it's new and shiny so I can see it now) to see if it's moving during the surge but if it is I can probably figure out how to hook the spring to it.

Does anyone know what is actually *causing* the surge? I'd like to fix that vs. just holding the throttle shaft still.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
