Broken Starter

I removed my WD starter today for simple cleanup and repaint. I reinstalled by lining up the holes and tightening down the tapered bolt. When I started the engine I heard a grinding noise and immediately shut it down. I removed the starter again to find the cast nose piece busted. Any ideas on what went wrong and how to prevent repeat with another starter? I thought it could only go in one way and if the hole lined up there was nothing else to check.

the old inertia style starters had springs in them for this very reason. Later the springs were replaced by rubber cushions. Alot of time the engine will kick back and damage the starter whether it be the drive end frame, the drive, or even the armature shaft can be twisted or bent. I don't know exactly what happened to yours but low voltage on the batteries can cause starter damage.
