I have an ad from a 1931 farm magazine that is for a "Curtis" combine. The president of the company is Curtis Baldwin. His plant is in Ottawa, Kansas. Can anyone shed any light on the why's and wherefore's of this company?

To shed some light on this question your best bet would be to get the book called "The Allis Chalmers Story".Curtis Baldwin was an inventor who grew up on the prairies of Kansas in the late 1800's.Among many inventions pertaining to grain harvesting was the "Standing Grain Thresher" of which he recieved his first patent for when he was 23 years old.This particular machine was unique in that it had no grain platform but instead had a giant duct hood over the front that resembled something of an overgrown vacuum cleaner.In fact it was.It sucked the grain heads off back to the seperating mechanism.Also worthy of note was the fact that this was a horsedrawn machine but the horses didnt pull it,they pushed it.Eventually Curtis Baldwin went broke and was taken over by Gleaner Corp.Curtis Baldwin died on April 19,1960.Basically this is kind of where Gleaner got its really serious start in the design and manufacturing of harvesters.Check out the book,theres a lot more info in it.Hope this helps!!!!
