Am looking at a WD45 with a stuck engine not driven for 5 years and sitting outside. I jacked up the rear end so could turn the wheels to maybe help loosen the engine but with the tractor in gear and the hand clutch pulled back the tranny would not engage. You can feel the gears moving but it's like the clutch is severly slippling. After sitting this long you would think the pressure plate would be frozen instead of slipping. Could the hand clutch be doing this or what. stumped!

You gotta lock the brake on one wheel or the other will turn too. Clutches can stick in the released position also. Myself, I never try to unstick an engine this way. Pull the head and see what you have, not difficult to do and can save you some bent parts! Allows you to get something in the cyls to break the rings loose too, kerosene works well.

Stuck up or stuck down ( Don't matter); I would follow Dave K. and any others that say pull the head and start looking.
If you have water long term in the cylinder a scraper, vacuum and 3 stone hone using oil can get you back up and running much quicker.
PB Blaster and Marvel Mystery Oil will leave you with something to work on.
Check the movement of all valves at this point.
Rocking the crank back and forth may get you out of the woods.
If not drop the oil pan and drive up each piston.
If it is a sleeved engine they should pop up.
Good luck with your evaluation and rebuild.

Just a thought, but if you got the whole rear end jacked up you'll have to keep the opposite tire from rotating in order to get power through the drive train.

So what if you get the engine to turn. The rings could still be stuck and there is a good bet you will bend the push rods. Tear it apart.

But you're unlikely to break stuff just hanging on the rear wheel. Some PB blaster down the plug holes will help loosen things up.

Wow gene, thats a revolution. Can I block one of the wheels then use the other to try and rock the stuck engine to loosen it? thanks

That's how you do it, just jack one side off the ground and have the tractor in gear and rock the tire back and forth. If you think one of the clutches are slipping, put the pto in gear, then get something to turn the pto shaft, a shaft off some pto driven implement works good, if you can turn the shaft, then the engine is turning or your main clutch is slipping.
