Is it possible once you have the tractor up and running to remove the battery cable and the tractor still run??? I recall from my earlier days in the mechanics shop, you could do this to a car to see if the alternator and/or voltage regulator were working properly...Just wondering if the same was true for a tractor.

not a good plan. the voltage regulator senses battery voltage and "sets the charge". if you remove the battery cable the generator / alternator can go to 20 volts output. you could blow out the headlights, voltage regulator, or burn the coil or points. some people have done this a low idle, surely do not give it any throttle. i would not suggest it at all.
