My book on my 1948 allis B calls for 20wnd.oil in the gear case.But that was over 50 years ago, My question is are the oils of today better to use,namly the multi grade oils for the gear box. Thanks you all, jimmy

Well, if I had been paying attention when I first read and replied to this post I would not have spoken so much about engine oils. I think the last sentance got me off the subject where Jimmy ask about the new oils. Anyway, I use the current tractor hyd oil in my WD , buy in 5 gal cans at Wallmart or Sams or any auto parts supply place. No problems with it in 5 years of using it.

I like the hytrans fluids that they have now, they have additives that might actually help instead of harm, like moisture inhibitors and the such, since your gear case holds about 7 quarts if you have hydraulic pump, really close to 8 quarts, you can buy it by the 5 gallon bucket at most auto parts stores if you dont have a tractor dealer close by, and it is equivelant to a 20w oil, some folks like the 20 and theres nothing wrong with that since it has worked for close to 56 years in your machine, in my area its hard to find a straight 20w oil and the hytrans is readilly available and not to pricey in my area.

They make combination oils that work well as a transmission and hydraulic oil. These HYTRANS oils are more pricy - and I know where you can get a synthetic that is even better (and more costly). Having said this, I'd not let the extra money go for this. Your tractor just will not be working that hard. Stick with the SAE 20 motor oil.

Most fellows today use the multigrade oils. The only time I might recomend not to is if the engine has many years of use with little or no oil and filter change. That "could" cause the new detergent oils to loosen a lot of sludge and stuff. However, it has been my experiance even if the engine has a lot of sludge, the new oils hold it in suspension and so cause no more problem than the need to change the oil and filter a lot more often the first few times. I have two 1948 tractors, a WD and a JD and use the new oils in both. I work both these tractors with no problems. The JD I did overhaul so I knew the engine was clean. The WD I have no idea of its history but the oil was clean when I bought it and the new type oil stays clean just fine.

you acn get a universal hydraulic-transmission fluid at local farm store, or Wal Mart. It is basically a 20wt non -foaming oil for hydraulic systems. That is the "new standard". it takes 8 quarts. If you want you can use 10w30 motor oil, but you may have a little foaming problem if you use the hydraulics a lot. i have two tractors setup with each oil, and both work fine.

Oils are better but I'd still us a 20 weight oil as the book says
