Advice on removing the sleeves on my WD 45.

My O-rings went bad and I can see the water leaking around the 2 middle sleeves into the oil pan. Before I start the project any good advice?

I removed 3 sleeves with no problem. The number #1 sleeve did not go well. I used a 2x2 piece of oak for the first 3 and split it on the #1 sleeve. I then cut 2 more pieces and also split them. The sleeve came up about an 1/8 inch and stoped. I guess I will have to make a puller. I noticed once the 3 sleeves were out and I cleaned up the water jacket that I have crackes in the lower block between the sleeves. Carl

Mr. Carl, don't worry about the cracks between the sleeves. It's more unusual not to find them than to find them. On the balky sleeve try driving it back in place from the top using wooden pieces, then back from the bottom again. Several times of this and it'll give up. You're on the right track and will do good. God Bless.

If the sleevs don't tap out with a block of wood and a (big) hammer make a puller with a big washer to fit over the bottom of the sleeve and a 1" to 2" piece of pipe to fit outside the sleeve on the top of the block with another big washer on top of it, and a piece of threaded rod to go down through it all and do the pulling.The tip and bottom washers can be square pieces of metal but they have to be thick enough not to bend, maybe 1/2" thick. Before installing the new sleeves clean the block at the top and sleeve sealing surfaces. Emery paper the sealing surfaces nice and smooth to keep from ripping the new O rings. The new sleeves should fit in by hand pressure or just drop in without the O rings when you are checking them. They should proturde .004" (I think) above the block to make sure they seal well. Lube the O rings when installing and be very carefull. Just gently tap them if you can't push them in.

Also helps to keep the new liners in the freezer overnight to shrink them a bit. Especially if you have a heated shop. Gives you a slight advantage.
