I recently restored a D-12 Series III. It has the dual speed transmission and this gets me 8 forward gears. Therefore it is easy to find a suitable speed for mowing with my 3 pt. 6' finishing mower. I do some harrowing with it and have found it reliable and up to the task. Changing the brake shoes requires removing the final drives and this is no joy, but workable. Be sure that the transmission functions in all gears. Some transmission noise is not uncommon in third gear. The service manual for the D-12 warns that early model tractors CA, D14, D10, D12 and ED-40 used a reverse idler gear that did not mesh with the pinion shaft reverse gear when in third gear. Therefore, the reverse idler gear would backlash and cause a noise (but no harm). A replacement was made available to satisfy customer complaints.

I have a D12 and a D10 and I find these to be very versatile and an all around great little tractors. Engine parts are easy to find, sheet metal is extremely rare and expensive to replace. Weight distribution for these tractors is excellent with around 70% on the rear tires and 30% on the front. These tractors tend to be a little more expensive than a Wd or CA,etc... The steering wheels are usually severly damaged on many of these. You can usually find a used one off of an old Gleaner combine that is an exact match in great condition(because they were in an enclosed cab). Good Luck!

I have a series II D-12. The 1962 and later D-10/12 were probably some of the best two wheel drive 30 HP farm tractors made. Some of the earlier models are lacking features like independent PTO and independent hydraulics and actual are less useful than a CA since they lack the CA's hand clutch. Many later models have factory 3-point hitch (not all 3-point hitches on D-10/12 are draft sensitive), the rest have AC's Snap-Coupler hitch. Expect to pay on the order of $450 to convert Snap-Coupler to 3-point.

Your best bet is to buy Norm Swinford's book on AC agricultural equipment and read up on the D10/12 and the changes that were made during their production.
