Allis Chalmers C - Starter Problem

Occasionally the starter drive doesn't fully engage resulting in a nasty grinding noise. I have rebuilt the starter once (a year ago) but still have the problem.

Any advice on how to fix this? Thanks

Dave,
I agree with JT. I think your ring gear is what the problem is. I have the same exact problem on my 43 C. Push it in and it grinds. Getting ready to split the tractor apart and do a clutch job on it too! At least its not as hard to do as it is on some tractors!

Eric & JT - thanks for your ideas. Sounds like a ring gear and clutch job may be next! Though I've taken part in several pulling meets with no clutch issues. I will try reshaping the drive teeth a bit to see if that helps first.

If the drive doesn't fix the problem you will probably need to replace the ring gear. I know that isn't the news you wanted to hear.

Job requires a tractor split. I bought a MM ZAN a number of years ago at a auction. Got on it to load and the starter just ground. Thought at that point I needed a drive. Got it loaded and the guy that consigned it told me what a great deal I go as he had just replaced the battery and starter drive (argh). I didn't have splitting stands so the job had to wait until I took the time to make a set.

If you can't find a ring gear you can give the old one a quarter turn or on some tractors they can be flipped. The teeth should have a rounded edge on the starter side some are rounded on both sides when new.

If it were me I would do the clutch while you have it apart.

I hope they just sold you the wrong drive.

Ed - I have already installed a replacement starter drive which did not fix the problem. Based on your experience, perhaps the replacement was not the correct part. Perhaps trying a local starter motor repair shop would be a good idea. Thanks for your response!

I also had a problem like your's on my b. I had to replace the bendex on the starter. I took it to a starter repair shop for just the part. He pulled out what I thought was the right one but when installed it would stick. I took it back and he looked at the old one with the new one and found out that the new one would turn 1/8 more. He looked around his shop and found the right one. No problen since. I would see if that is the problem. If not other things could still be the problem. I hope this helps. ED

COULD BE YOUR TEETH ARE WORN FLAT ON THE ENDS, SO THEY DON'T ENGAGE PROPERLY. TAKE A GRINDER AND GRIND THE TAPER BACK. WORKED ON MY B & C
