oil flow on wd

Hello,
This morning I was running my WD when it began losing power. A quick check showed the oil pressure had fallen out of the "normal" range on the guage. I shut down, allowed it to cool, tried it again but pressure did not rise. Checked the guage and it functions. Removed the oil filter and discovered what I consider to be unusual, that the oil was flowing from the center tube that inserts into the filter. It appears that the oil comes from the head through a 1/4 inch tubing. I would think that the oil should rise up from the bottom of the filter and flow outward to the head. I have a shop manual but it only shows the oil pump and not the flow configuration. Is this a normal flow? Could this just be an indication that my filter is plugged? Admittedly, I haven't changed the filter since I got the tractor 5 years ago (I know, shame on me). Can anyone help me? Thanks

The oil goes from the pump to the block where the rilief valve is. Check yours to see that it isn't stuck or has a broken spring. It is behind the big plug on the right side of the block, low down. From there the oil goes to the cam shaft where it goes the length of the cam shaft and down to the main bearings and out to the rods. Some oil flows out of the block in the tubes running around the side of the engine, it goes up to the valve rocker arms, to the filter and pressure gauge, on 45s to the governor. After oikl goes through the filter it goes back into the engine and drains down to the sump again. If you don't have the right filter it won't provide the right back pressure and you can have low oil pressure.

The oil goes up the center tube. Be careful which filter you buy. It must be the packed yarn type not the paper filter. The Oil system relies on the filters resistance to create the oil pressure.

the problem was the filter. Before driving 25 miles to town to get a new one, I rinsed the old one in gas. Pressure came right up. So this weekend, allis gets new oil (straight 30w) and a new filter along with all the other lubes she deserves. Thanks for the help guys
