I have a 53 ca I just purchased about a week ago it had been sitting probably about 5 years it supposedly ran fine when parked I cleaned out the fuel system and rebuilt the carb it fired right up but it surges very badly probably 500 to 800 rpm at full throtle its enough to kill the engine at mid throtle if I pull the throtle lever off the carb and run it manualy it runs fine untill I hook it back up so I'm pretty sure its a govoner problem all the springs seem to be in place and I pulled the cover off the govnor and the whieghts are free my I&T manual really dosn't have much info and I dont know what to look at next thanks in advance

Start by tossing the IT Manual. Just enough info to get you in trouble. Get a real Repair Manual and Parts Manual. Problem will be solved in no time.

Make sure you have an anti surge spring. It connects to the carburator linkage by a hole in the linkage and the spring goes straight up and hooks on a manifold stud.

If I was a guessin by what you say on how it is acting, I would be guessing it was a fuel problem. If it has a full stream of gas flowing out of the gas line where it goes into the carb then I would go back into the carb and check again. Rebuilding a carb can have many meanings to different people. When you say at full throttle it will die makes me think you are using up what fuel that can get into the engine and then it has no fuel to keep running. At half throttle and the fule has been used and the engine starts to slow and use less fuel it can replenish enough fuel to keep running.

Dick is right,Sounds like you still have an orifice plugged in the carb.Soak carb in CHEM DIP,you can find at most auto parts stores.Then clean thoroughly with spray carb. cleaner.I you have to take some .030 mechanics wire and run it through every orifice you can find.reinstall kit and you should be in business.Also check to see that your throttle shaft and bushings are not worn.wiggle the shaftup and down.If it has any significant play,that could also be your problem.This can cause it to suck secondary air in around the throttle shaft and cause an erroneous fuel mixture.Most machine shops can fix this problem.Done it myself many times.Hope this helps!!!!
