D17 Questions

Hello, this is my first post, great site! I recently purchased a D17 gas and have a few questions....

There are no working guages on the tractor. Yesterday I installed an oil pressure guage and checked the the pressure. Cold was 26psi idle and after running 25 minutes setting in the garage it was 22psi. This oil was 4 years old according to the date scrathed on the old oil filter. I then dumped the oil and replaced it with 15W-40 and put a WIX 51515 filter on and it runs right at 29-30 psi cold/idle..... Is this a decent number?

I had planned on changing the rod bearings as I had a knock last spring when plowing my food plot (only when I really sank the 3 bottom plow in clay). My mechanic recomended that I not open it up with this kind of oil pressure.... Agreed? He said it could have been the timing or bad gas...

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the replys! I will get some straight 30 wt in it soon.

It only knocked when it was really pulling hard, so I don't think I will be able to do the scope, hose or plug method. I can see myself getting run over walking beside that thing, and I know it will not pull that plow on 3 cylinders...

Starts, idles and runs fantastic other wise. Purs like a kitten as they say. My local mechanic said he would come out and listen to it this spring when I break up my food plot. He's a pretty sharp guy with this stuff.

I agree with Orvis. My dad was an Allis mechanic for 15 years and was adamant about running 30wt oil in the older Allis tractors. We ran D14, D17 series I through IV gas and diesel and 30wt was all they got. Not bad for hydraulic fluid either in a pinch.

Most of the older equipment was designed to use 30 wt oil, not multigrade.
I have had problems using multigrade oil in older equipment, like engine knocking. I change the multigrade out and put in 30wt and no knocking.
I am not a fan of multigrade oils in any tractor unless it is 1980 and newer.

That's enough oil pressure--I wouldn't tear it down unless you started seeing something under 15 or 20 PSI. Our D17 diesel presssure is more like 40 PSI hot and pegs the gauge at cold start up, but the pressure you're quoting is fine. If you suspect a knock, you can isolate it by listening to the engine with a stethoscope (or a piece of 1/2" or 3/4" pipe held up to your ear). You can also remove one plug wire at a time and see when the noise stops. Generally, a bad rod bearing doesn't knock intermittenly--once it's bad you should hear it whenever the engine is running and warmed up.
