Hello:I am new to tractors, and so am looking for advice. I am in search of a better means of boat launching; a 16' sailboat on a sand beach, about 800lb. I am currently using a small car to pull it in and out of the lake by tow rope, but the car has traction problems even with aired down snow tires. Once moving, no problem, but hard to get it moving! Dad's Jeep TJ does it no problem. Used to use a winch for hauling out, but getting the boat back into the lake poses a problem, especially with the recent low water levels. So, have been researching tractors for a while now. Something cheap is what I need! Considering this beast: 1961 Allis Chalmers D15 Tractor

Serial number: 3121 it is being sold for scrap, and the dealer who has it says engine is out and they are trying to decide if it should be scrapped or sold. I would purchase as-is, on the proviso that the block is not cracked. I am game to take something with a seized engine, just not one which would require total replacement. I don't need something that looks good, or runs particularly well, per se. Just has to be able to move the boat. Too much tractor for the job? I have been told an 8N or 9N is what I should look for; my neighbor, who uses one to haul his boat seems to verify that. Also Farmall A or H have been suggested, but I'm nervous about stability issues caused by the narrow wheel track on the front. Any basis for this? Thanks. Dante McLean
