hello, I need to ask a question about hydraulic transmission fluid, is this stuff just automatic transmission fluid,like dextron or mercron,the reason I ask is because im getting ready to change the transmission oil in an old b and straight 20 weight is hard to come by here, and I saw on this web about some fellow went to wal- mart and bought hydra trans fluid, or is this something that I have to go to a tractor dealer to buy(which is becoming scarce around here also) the wal marts I got to dont sell tractor related anything. can you use 5w-30 or would that be to heavy, whats in there now is some kind of runny yellowish brown looking mess, I just bought the b and got it running last week, and I need to get that mess out of it, truth be known the oil in the transmission is probably 20 years old. thanks for any info.

Well... as for being careful to only use what the manual calls for, keep in mind that things have changed technologically in 50 years. Some brand/make of Thans-Hydraulic Fluid should be available at many auto or tractor parts stores.

It is basically 20wt. oil anyway so you will be in keeping with the manual, but it has addatives (unknown 50 years ago) that be better for your trans/hydraulic system than 20wt by itself. And it is a fluid... like oil or gas and I can't say I have ever had any problems with any oil or gas I have bought somwhere other than a specialty store. We realize you may not have a NAPA or TSC right around the corner... not all of us do.

thanks Steve,Tom and Dave for your replies,as far as allis dealers are concerned,there hasnt been any in about 18 years in this part of the country, as far as napa and wal-mart are concerned,some folks have to do what they have to do to get things running and in order, some of us cant drive 5 states over to get parts because we dont have an agco in our backyard, youre right,what goes around comes around!

John, the hytrans fluid is best because it is anti foaming and has certain non oxidizers made for systems that do not get over 200 degrees. you should be able to get this at NAPA, or Wal Mart ( in the auto section of our store). That being said, i ran a C on 10W30 motor oil for years in the transmission. Remember these tractors dont have much of a hydraulic system, and airation is minimal. By the way, the hytrans is a 20wt oil. drain the crap out of your transmission ( it has water in it) and put in 8 quarts of 10w30. run it for a few hours and see how it works, also this will clean the inside. drain it a week later ( it will look bad, but not as bad as what is in there now). then add either the hytrans, or 10w30 if you like it.

You can use "tractor lube", the general purpose oil you are talking about, in your tractor. It is make for transmissions, rear ends, power steering, hydraulic systems, etc. NAPA has it or can get it, I bought mine there, I understand Wal Mart has it, although maybe your's doesn't. The 20 weight business got strated when farmers didn't have ready access to hydraulic oil or "tractor lube". Now that non detergent is hard to get and tractor lube is easy to find forget the 20weight and use the tractor lube.

Stay with what the original owner's manual calls for. It serviced that tractor well for 50 years or so. It was designed for that purpose. Too far to go to a dealer? Maybe because too many thought they could save a few cents at NAPA, WALMART, etc? Will they have machine parts for you? What goes around, comes around.

In my WD I use a tractor type Hyd fluid that I bought at Sams Club. However I have seen it at many auto parts places also. It is general purpose hydrulic fluid. Any shop that sells to contractors should also have it. When I first got the tractor I could not find 20W non-detergent (It must be non-detergent or it will foam all over the place!) I used 30W instead but on a cool day it took forever for that stuff to warm up enough to work at any speed.
