I have a 51' WD and I am all ready to paint it and I discovered the gear shift pulls out. Now I can only get it into 2nd, 3rd, sometimes 4th, and reverse. Do I need a whole new assembly? Shifter plate and all? Or is there a easy way to fix this. Please help. It is holding me back for almost a month and shows are coming in a hurry. Thanks. Bill {Antique Acres}

Bill:

Do you have the retainer spring and dust cover in place? The dust cover slides down in around the shift lever and the retainer sits on top of it to keep everything in place. If the spring has been squashed together you can sometimes use a screwdriver to spring it back out enough to serve as a retainer. There is also a pivot pin that goes in a key slot in the ball on which your shift lever rotates.

I have the dust cover in place. I assume no retainer or spring. Nothing like that has ever caught my eye. The pin is in place, but the shifter still slides out past it. Any ideas in detail on how to fix it right, cheaply? Bill {Antique Acres}

It sounds like the retaining washer and snap ring are missing. I just worked on one of these so things are pretty fresh in my feeble mind. The shift lever slides down into the top of the transmission cover over the square headed pin. then a cup shaped retaining washer goes down over the ball shape on the lever. This retainer is held in place by a snap ring. Then the rubber dust cover snaps into the groove around the outside of the shift tower. It sounds like the retaining washer ands snap ring are missing. Part numbers (old) Washer, pivot, gear shift lever 207772. Ring, snap, gear shift lever pivot washer 202875. these are old numbers, but your AGCO dealer should be able to reference them. Good luck. I tried to e-mail you, but it didn;t go through. I do not have a Agco dealer in my area that is worth a @%$&. They only care about the new high dollar stuff and not the older antiques. That is why so many AC's are becoming fence row specials. Anyways is there a way to fix this without getting the new parts? Also is there any thing besides the bottom of the shifter that holds it in the shift forks. If not the this is probably a simple problem to fix if only thing that holds shifter into forks is a retaining clip. Thanks for the help. Bill {Antique Acres}

Anyone who needs older AC parts would do well to contact Tom Hurtt at Hurtt Equipment. His email address is Hurtt@polar.polarcomm.com. I have an AGCO dealer seven miles from me and I still order some of my parts from Hurtt. The two parts you need are not real expensive, if I remember right, about $10, and they will make your tractor shift a lot nicer. Good Luck. TED

Bill,

I think you can make your oun. The snap ring on mine looks like a lock washer that is about 1 1/2" in diameter cut to resemble a C. Sharpen the ends inward so that you can slip the point of a small screwdriver past it to start prying it out, and stretch it so it fits tight in the groove. You may want to add an extra washer if there's still too much up and down play in the shift lever. Good luck.
