Can someone tell me how to get the cylinder sleeves out of a 1953 CA without cracking the block between the cylinders.

Thanks, guys for the help. I may not have cracked it, the machine shop people don't think I did. They magnifluxed between the other two and did not find a crack. We will see if they get the others out without cracking it. I will let you know.

This is the way I removed one, but the block cracked between the cylinders, from the way it looks the sleeve ledge protrudes about one quarter inch into the water jacket. With fifty years of rust and residue build up, it makes this part of the sleeve a little larger than the opening in the block thus spreading the block when it comes through.

it is not uncommon for the blocks to be cracked between the sleeves when torn donw. are you sure you did it, or was it there before and you just found it now? the head gasket will seal the crack. many many CE engines have this cracks.

I agree with Steve. More of these engines have cracks between the cylinders than don't. After I take a head off I use an angle grinder with a knoted wire cup wheel to clean the block deck and inspect for cracks. I have beat out some really stuck cruddy sleeves and never cracked a block in doing so. My understanding of the crack problem is that it is caused from the engine over heating sometime in the past. Freezing causes the cracks to be wide and uneven across the deck rather than a fine level crack.

turn the block upside down. set a oak block on the liner and strike with a 5 poound hammer. the block will not crack. you can also make the "factory too" which would be a threaded rod down the middle of the sleeve with a plate on the bottom and another plate blocked up a inch above the block top face. note, the liner is mounted with o-rings. you only need to move about 1/4 inch and it will start moving easier after that. you move about 1 inch and it slides out. you are not pushing in the full 6 inches.
