Governor on a WD

DO I need to change the governor when I change from a magneto to a distributor on my WD. I got it out yesterday and it sounded like a John Deere popper when it was under a load. Just put new plugs , wires and cap on it. Points look good. Any thoughts?

Bob,
Don't think the govenors are different. We've gotten complete distributor/governor & mag/ govenor units in for rebuilding and the governor part looks the same. Not 100% sure though. You may have a bad plug, a hairline crack in the cap or just a wire crossed. Just cause' they're new, doesn't mean they're good especially if the plugs are Champion. A sticky valve will make her pop too...

Thanks so much Steve. I appreciate your reply. I did not think the governors were any different, but my brother is putting together a C and he was told that the governors are different. He is blaming this for the fact that his tractor would not make any RPM at full throttle.
