Help with Mod B cyl sleve

I have torn my 48 B down and pulled the sleves. Everything checks out and I am going to put it back together. When I checked all the parts, everything mic'd to factory standards. So I ordered new piston rings and sleve O rings, gasket set, and thought I was ready to go. When I got the O rings, I noticed they did not look right. I checked my parts book and they are the ones listed. the ones that got sent to me are about 1/8" diamiter. The ones on the sleves I took out are 3/16" flat wide, like a rubber band. When I looked at the parts numbers on the pistons, rods, and crank, none of them are listed as good parts in my parts book. However they are all marked with the Allis casting mark. Has any one ever run into this? I understand that a round O ring will flatten out, but I just dont know how a 1/8" dia ring will flatten to 3/16"x1/8".....to me the math does not work out. The thing that makes me realy wonder is that the grove in the liner is also 3/16" wide. Is that how it should be for a round O ring?

Hi Ted,

The standard groove width for a 1/8" cross section o-ring used as a static seal is 0.187"-0.192" when no backing rings are used. The 3/16" cs o-ring would have a groove width of 0.281"-0.286" for the same application.

So Rod.....the ones that were in there must have been wrong, they were wide. The groove in the liner is .1875, that and the width of the ones that were in there are what has been making me think I had wrond ones. The book talks about using white lead to lube them with when I install. Can I use neverseaze in place of white lead?

I use neversieze quite a bit I think I would tend to shy away from it for such a use. I have always used plain old household Vaseline for a general purpose o-ring lube. I have never replaced those particular rings on my B but if I did, I would use the Vaseline since I have had good luck with it that way for a long time.
