looking at a c allis with belly mower and narrow front end..it steers pretty hard and the brakes are not very good...what typically goes wrong with the steering and how hard to fix is it..and how difficult are the brakes to repair..thanks for any help..cost and difficulty will probably determine if i purchase this or not

The brakes are not that hard to replace after you have done a few. I had a real learnig experience the first time. I was trying to sace the old band and the hinge on the bottom was rusted fast and was loaded with greese and dirt. I don't try to save the bands any more. If they come out in good shape fine. If they come out easy they are good to reline. If they come out really really hard I have found that the band needs to be replaced anyway. What I have found on a hard stearing C that is not sloppy as well, is that some one has tightene the adjusting screw in the stearing box, located behind the starter, too hard/too tight. The other place is in the out put shaft in the front. The seal gets bad and moisture gets in and the shaft turns hard. You just about have to take it out and hone the bushings and wire wheel the shaft, if that is the problem. If it is sloppy you might have to buy parts but what I just explained only takes time.

I haven't spent too much time on the steering, but I can tell you that if parts are worn, it can be a little spendy to repair. If the steering is tight, then you may just need to adjust a few things, which will be easy.

The brakes aren't that hard, but can be a bear. You really need to be patient to get the old bands out and the new ones in, because there isn't much clearance between the brake drum and the casting that surrounds it. Sometimes people actually chip out some of the casting to get the bands in and out, but I've been able to do it with some patience and luck. Be aware that there will be rust and dirt and crud inside the housings that will need to be cleaned out so you have enough room to work in there.

Depending on the price, and your mechanical ability, you might be able to get a good deal here. Good luck!
