I'm planning on repairing the rear wheel on my 45 that has rusted badly around the valve stem hole. Does anyone that has done this have any tips? I'm not sure what the thickness of the metal is. I t sort of feels like 1/8" but might be 3/16". I'm quite confident that me and my handy dandy MIG welder can remove the cancer and perform the chemo treatment. It looks like a small challenge, anyway.

Greg, Where ya at? I'm ordering a new rim for my 45, and you can have the old rim which has 3 good sections in it. My cancer ran under a rail, so I decided to change it. I'm in central Iowa. If you want it, come get it, or you can pay freight, and it's yours.

Greg: I have done this many times on various tractors and used different methods depending on the cancer on the wheel.
One method is to grind to clean all the rust down to metal. Not too concerned about what the hole size is because I then take similar thickness metal and cover the hole inside. Weld one edge then heat and hammer the metal into the hole using a backup so as to make the patch fill the hole. Then completely weld, grind, weld some more if necessary to finish grinding to a smooth surface. Drill the hole for the valve stem. I then use putty to cover the patch, sand it and it is ready for use.
Another method I have used on larger holes is to cut a large section to clear bad spot. Then using an old wheel of similar design for the rim area cut it out, weld it in the patch area and finish as above. Hammer "welding" these patches can make a bad patch look pretty good.
Lastly, I have used a thin strip of metal with a hole drilled in it, brazed it over the hole, grind to finish and there it is.

i think yo will find 12 gauge will be thick enough. 10 gauge is 1/8 inch or .125 inch--- dont think the rims will be that thick. In a pinch i have used 16 gauge to do small repairs.
