D14 generator/altenator

Have been having trouble starting my D14, I thought the starter was going out but it tested OK. Tractor would start after removing the battery (6V pos ground) and charging with a trickle charger. So decided to take the generator and have it tested. When I removed the generator, it has "12V" stamped in the housing. I am assuming that this is indicating a 12 volt charger. If it is a 12 volt charger, should I just buy a 12 volt battery? What would this do to my electrical system? Does it make sense that this would not charge my battery in the tractor? Any help would be appriciated need to get this thing back to reliable before spring.

I believe that somwhere around the change to the "black bar" grill that the D-14's were built with factory 12V instead of factory 6V. I have an operator's manual that talks about a 6V system in the text, but has 12V components listed in the wiring schematic. Both my D-14's are 12V, and one is pre-black bar grill and the other is a black bar grill model.

Thanks Tim, I am pretty sure mine was a 6V from the factory. My serial number is 1466 which is pretty early 1957 model. I plan on getting the generator/altenator to the electrical shop on Thursday to have it tested.

most if not all of the D14 were 6 volt originally. The last few built might have been 12 volt. The starter will not care which you use. The distributor is o.k., but the coil must be 12 volt or 6. (or add a dropping resistor to the 6 volt and use a 12 volt battery). The lights must be 12 volt or 6 volt. Last thing and the biggest is the charging system. If the 12 volt generaotr is o.k. and thats what you want, i would buy a new 12 volt battery. If the generator is bad and you want to stick with a 6 volt system, now is the time. Either is o.k. and not dificult to wire up. just pick one.

Well if its a 12 volt gen. and you are putting a 6 volt battery on then the gen. is killing the battery. Put in a 12 volt battery and as long as you have 12 volt lights etc it will be ok, and maybe also fix your problem
