I have a 51' WD and the gear shift pulls out. I can only get it into 2nd, 3rd, reverse, and ocassionaly 4th. Never 1st. I can tell it is worn, but does the pin in the top of the housing supposed to hold the ball in place. Also is there anything that is supposed to be on the bottom as far as a pin that goes in the forks. Can someone please tell me how to fix this. I have got the engine together and I am needing to do this so it will be complete. Thanks in advance. Bill {Antique Acres}

Bill,

My WD45 jams between gears occasionally because of wear. I think its the nub on the very bottom of the shift lever. So I have to take the shifter out and manually reset the forks to neutral, then put it back in. My shift lever is held in by a washer and two snap rings that sit above the ball on the shifter and fit in a groove in the top of the housing. I have to pry them out with a couple of small screwdrivers. I think my problem is typical of 45's because of the curved shifter. Mine's been apart so many times, I can't be sure if the snap rings are original. I don't know about the pins. Hope this helps.
