I need some more advice on a 180 I am thinking about buying. I have never run anything with a hand clutch, so how do change gears from forward to reverse with the pto running? Several guys have told me if you put the power director lever in neutral and stop the forward motion, you can quickly shift into reverse without the foot clutch. Is this hard on the transmission? I think I can get used to the operation of this tractor, but there are times I need to back up with the pto running when mowing and baling. Any comments would be appreciated.

Yes, you can do it, it just depends how many parts you want to buy. The hand clutch was not designed to be used in that manner, but with age and wear, it can work. A lot better to use the hand clutch, and add just a bit of foot pedal. At lower rpms, you can shift forward/reverse, etc. You'll know if you are hard on the tranny by the gear grinding noise. Then crack open the checkbook.

I have a 190 which basically operates the same way. I use it on the snow blower and once the hydraulic oil is warmed up a bit I can shift between forward and reverse without foot clutching easily. It is the slickest rig for blowing snow. I can run circles around the foot clutch guys.

Just throttle down the tractor when you shift that way and you will be OK.
