Front end weights for Model B

Does anyone know if they made front end weights for the Model B? If so, where can I locate some?
I plan on doing some plowing with the B and have liquid in the rear tires. Will I still need the the weights on the front of the tractor. Thanks in advance for everyones help. This is an excellent sight with a lot of helpful people.

I have front wheel weights on my 1953 Model B that I use for plowing. These weights came with the set of plows that was purchased in 1942 for my father's Model C. In 1942, to my knowledge, AC did not have the side weights. Later, AC discouraged the use of the wheel weights as they added a strain to the front axle and entire front end.

Front weights are not necessary, especially if you are plowing on level ground, and plowing light soils. In my opinion, front weights are worthwhile. Tom Davison

I have a set of side weights for sale and can possibly round up a front axle weight...$200 each set.

How much does the front axle weight weigh? It looks like it is easier to mount than the side weights. Is that true? Thanks! Tom

Tom, The front axle "weight" is actually a pair of weights installed back-to-back. There is a 1/8" thick steel backing plate, the same general shape as the weights, that is hung off the axle pivot pin. The weights are bolted through this plate to the axle by J-bolts that wrap partially around the axle. My guess is that each of the two weights weigh 80-100 lbs. The engine side weights are about 100 lbs each also. None of these weights are particularly easy to install if you are doing it by yourself. I have done all of them alone and I am not particularly strong so it can be done, but it is not a lot of fun. I would rather install the side weights because they are at a more convenient height to have to muscle into place. The axle weights are installed from a sitting position. Here's a different picture that shows the pair of axle weights back-to-back:

I'm not sure on the weight, but it should list it in the manual. The side weights are 96 lbs each and only held on by one bolt each. The front slides over a bushing. I can remove mine in 5 minutes. Front weight is 2 piece with a metal plate to support them and 2 J bolts to mount. They will weigh more and might be a 2 man job. I haven't ever taken mine off yet.

Hi there Eldon,

I was writing my response while you were posting :o). That backing plate sure helps to install the axle weights because it holds the J-bolts in place while you lift the weights up into place onto them. One person can do it but it is not confortable because of the awkward position. As I recall, they are about the same weight as the engine side weights.

Yes, AC made front weights for the B. I have the engine side weights (one on each side) and the front axle weights (sometimes called "wishbone weights") as shown below. I have seen front wheel weights on a B, both inner and outer but do not have any myself. I have occasionally seen some for sale on the allischalmers dot com site. I understand the wishbone weights are fairly hard to come by. Do you actually need them? I suppose it depends on the type of soil you are plowing. I have always used them in the past but have not plowed with my B in about 30 years.

Well if your talking about useing a mounted plow that was made for the B, then no you don't need any front weights. The one I had years ago did just fine with out any added weight on the front.
