I'm building an overhead hoist in my garage.I'm useing an 8inch I-beam for the main support.Due to low ceiling height,10 feet,Iwould need to lay the I-beam flat.It is 8inch x 1 quarter inch with 4 inch webs.How much weight can it support on a ten foot span?

These guys are right. An I beam has no strength when laid on it's side. Don't try something questionable because it could come down and someone might get hurt badly or get killed. This is not something to take short cuts with.

Wayne, you should strongly consider using new beams. Tell the steel yard about your 4 inch clearance problem, span, load requirements, etc. They can steer you right; single beam of greater thickness, or double beams. If the job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

wayne, the strength of a beam is determined by how much steel you can get as far away from the center line of the beam as possible. that is why they make them look like a I with a heavy top plate and bottom plate. this is a lot stronger than something that looks like a H. if you only have 4 inches height, you would be further ahead to use a 4 inch I-beam ssetting correctly. if the beam was as wide as possible, that helps. also setting two 4 inch beams side by side would make it 8 inches wide, but much stronger than your 8 inch laying on its side. The more it looks like a wide I, the better. if you already have the 8 inch beam and must use it, thats another story

Yeah, thats the story... I want to use the scraps that I have to save on costs.I know i'd have more srength standing it up but I need to use what I have.I might weld an extra support down the beam.What do you think about that idea?

how are you going to run a wheel trolly on it? running a 2 inch strap up and down in the middle will add some support, but remember the more metal you have as far from the center as possible gets more strength. i think i would set it up the 8 inch way and just forget about the exta 4 inch of head room.

Having built industrial steel and wood frame buildings for many years in the North, I would be looking for a way to recess the 8" beam in the ceiling? - If you use an underhung hoist, etc., you may be able to recess the beam to the point needed for hoist truck clearance only? W.W. Grainger Co. has an assortment of such - as do many suppliers.

The most failures I have seen are due to the lack of bracing. The beam can handle the weight, but when the stresses increase the beam moves, thus creating a different loading condition. Whichever way you go with - bracing is critical!

Hi Waynesville,

It sounds like you have a wide-flange I-beam that you need to lay on it's side. One that fits your description would be a W8x13. Such a beam has an 8" depth, 4" wide flanges and has a material thickness of about 1/4". It weighs 13 lb/ft.

Such a beam laid on it's side would look like this: |-| and not this: I

If that is the case, a standard steel beam with a span of 10 feet will hold a safe load of 1000 lb concentrated at the center of the span. The deflection downward at that point with that amount of load would be about 1/2".

Under the more standard beam orientation (upright and not on it's side), a safe midpoint load would be about 7000 lb with a midpoint deflection of about 1/4", all other conditions the same. The orientation of the beam really does make that much difference.

No guarantees here but that is how I would plan it if I were doing it for myself.

8in i-beams weight either 18.4lbs or 23 lbs per ft,8in wide flange beams weight either 10 0r 13 lbs per foot, i cut all of the above at work for customers here in the midwest for a steel co,to customer length, and for what you want to due the have to be standing up for the strenght, why not put in a 6by12.5 or 6by 17.25 lbs i beam or a6by 16lb wfbeam, i can find out at work monday what the tensile strenght are. dave stephenson
