I've been working on my WD-45 and it still won't start/run well. Thanks to Duey, I've rewired the 12V system. I got it to run twice after rewiring, but it ran rough. Thanks to Eldon, I figured out how to get a blade mounted on the back and what a "snap coupler" is. It started briefly today before I got the blade mounted... once I put the blade on, it wouldn't even pop again. Here's where we're at now:

1. I've got fair to good spark (1/8-1/4 in)at the end of the plug wires. It's good enough to have zapped me a few times. I'm having trouble setting the point gap because I have no way to turn the engine accurately (a relative of mine is sending me a crank). The only part I haven't replaced is the plugs. Trying to start the thing drained my battery twice today. When I pull the plugs, they're wet with gas.
2. I have pretty good compression. It blows gas out if you turn over the engine w/o a plug in.
3. My carb leaks gas everywhere...especially back out where the air cleaner is attached. I've taken it apart twice. The float is free but may not be adjusted right. I've reset the other adjustments according to the owners manual.

Any suggestions?? I bought the tractor originally to move snow...just lately, we've gone from nothing to close to 12 inches. Every time it snows I have to blow out the driveway with a push-snowblower until I get the tractor running. My wife may be running out of patience!!

I can't add much except if you rebuild the carb try to get all the old parts out and make SURE all the passages are clean, blown out with air and checked with a wire to loosen up any debris. Then install the rebuild kit. Maybe I was lucky, but I was able to get everything out of a WD carb that sat outside on the tractor for 25 years and it now runs great.

Ed,
You have a couple problems here the way it sounds. The first thing to do is as everyone else mentioned, screw new spark plugs in it. Preferably, Autolite's. Second, you may have a sinking float which is bringing up the fuel level and making fuel run out of every crevis of the carb. As one of the fellows mentioned, pull the floats out and gently shake em' to see if they took on fuel. Usually, you can feel that they're heavy, or hear them slosh which indicates fuel inside the float or floats. If it's a Marvel carb, it probably needs the crud cleaned out of the idle ports for starters. Over the years, water mixing with fuel starts rust in the bottom of the M/S carbs and starts plugging enrichment jets and so on. Mainly because the carbs are cast iron. Seen it many times when rebuilding our customers carbs. If you don't know a port is there, you'll never see it! Don't know if your WD is equipped with mag or distributor, but point gap for F/M mags is .020, and .022 for distributor. Good Luck, you'll get her straightened out. If you need any help or service, drop us a line...

With 12 Volt, you should not have to choke it at all...!! Mine cranks fast enough to start at 0^ without choking at all with 12 Volts.. You might try a new set of Plugs, after you pull all the plugs, and crank it to blow the excess fuel out of the cylinders and leave the fuel shut off.. It is far better NOT to flood it...!!

Check the float in the carb. Take the float out and shake to see if it has gas in it. If it does you will either have to repair the float or get a new one. Just my 2c.

Something I've done in the past to turn an engine for setting the point gap is to put the tractor in high gear with the plugs out and just push it forward until it's where I want it. If your ground isn't level this is probably unsafe. Hope this helps. SAm in NS

regarding point adjustment, pull all the plugs out(you need new ones anyway,)and turn the engine over by the fan, with the plugs removed it should turn easily.find the high spot and set to specs-usually as long as they are closing you will get spark-lots of good ideas,it should clear up.keep us posted and dont give up !!!!! !

I agree with Jack. If your plugs are wet and it's blowing gas out the spark plug hole, it sounds more like an ignition problem to me. Once it's flooded because it isn't firing, gas will slober out of the carb even if it's a brand new one. It would be a lot cheaper to put in new plugs or at least clean up the old ones good first and take it from there. Good luck and don't give up. Nothing starts or runs better than a WD45 when there tuned up right.

If you have the Marvel Schebler carb on your WD45 you can get a basic kit at most auto parts (NAPA etc.) for around 20 bucks. Personally don't think you will get anywhere with getting started and running properly until you get your fuel flow corrected. As Old says-you might want to change plugs also. Have seen a good spark at the wire, but when the plug is installed it will go to ground. Fought a 7 Horse Kohler for six months before changing plugs-then started first pull.

Sounds like its flooding which means you still have carb problems, some times when they is old they don't fix good. You may need to brake down and get a new or factory rebuilt one, I can get them for around $170 and so can you at value bilt drop the E and add.com for there web site. You should also get new plugs by the way..Now for a trick that might work for you, turn the gas on and count to 100 then turn it off try to start it, if it starts quickly turn the gas back on. If that works you still have carb problems but you might be able to get by till you can get the problem fixed right that way
