Grinding in the Hydraulics - CA

I have a 'CA' with hydraulics hooked-up to pistons for use with a front-end bucket/snow-plow. The system was complemented with an external holding tank (about 6 gallon total capacity). These hydraulics are not 'live'. In order to raise the front-end bucket, the hydraulic pump on the 'CA' must be engaged. When this pump is engaged, the action is slow and there are grinding noises in the pump-area. The pump keeps working - the grinding noises are not a crash, boom and die kind of noises. Any ideas/specifics as to what I will be looking for/replacing?

its cold outside. are you sure the noise is not cavitation? what kind of oil are you using? external tank, but using the factory pump? ae you sure oil is getting to the pump. you should be using universal hydraulic transmission fluid. 20wt fluid. you get it at Wal Mart for $10. for 2.5 gallons. The pump is held in the hole by 4 bolts. easy enough to pull out and take a quick look at the cams and arms. need a book if you take the pump apart.
