My son has a 190xt diesel and I am helping him work on it. PROBLEM: It has a Hi - Low clutch on it and it is operated hydraulicly. It has Low range and just barely moves when in high range. We set the spool valve up per the book and still a very week high range. We then noticed that the hydraulic level was low. I looked at the dip stick and it appears to have been worn off (it comes to a sharp 45 degree end) with some hash marks right at the end of the dip stick. So before we can proceed on figuring out what is wrong we really need to know the dimensions of the dip stick. Like how far down from the cap end is the full mark. Usually a dip stick has a mark a couple of inches from the end then another area with hash marks or a full line on it. This dip stick just has about a 1/2 inch area with the hash marks. Any help would be appreciated on the length of the dip stick and where the marks are on it... THANKS MUCH JIM

The way you describe the dip stick, 45 angle with some hash marks is the transmission compartment. Look for the screw in dip stick in other hole under shift stick cover plate. It is on left side of of shifting rod. That one should be a thick narrow dip stick rod with several marks on that one. That is the hyd. and the 2 speed compartment.

From the tip to where it is fastened to the inside of the cap is 8-5/8"

That's the way the dip sticks are made, the hash marks are so the oil clings to the stick so you can see the oil. I fill mine just to the top of the hash marks. If you want I can measure mine later today and let you know about the length.

Gene, Thanks for the input. However we put gauges on the high and low test ports last night and we have 275 psi in low and 275 psi in high. When we shift to neutral we have zero. When we switch from low to high we see a real smooth transition from zero to 275. and a real smoth decline from 275 to zero. And still very little movement in the tractor in high range. We have therefore concluded that the high clutches are worn out. Also we put 15 quarts of fluid into the case. So we might assume that the fluid went low and the clutches overheated and burned themselves out. We are now looking for the Allis dealer to give us a price on replacing the clutches in the power director. Thanks for getting back to me

Check the rest of the linkage to make sure the valve is engaging fully. On mine the bushings in the bellcrank were worn and the valve would not fully engage. The clutch may be worn out also.

Thanks for the reply.
We also replaced the bushing in the side of the torquetube. Now we can make the valve adjustment. I guess we are off to the ARCO dealer to get the measurements on the dip stick. Also we are going to put pressure gauges onto the spool valve to determine pressures.
Thanks for your reply Jim

An arco dealer should be able to get you a new one, Also if the level is low it won't go very well in high. If I hadn't sold my 190XT this summer I could tell you how long it is but.
