i bought a piece of property it has on it a ac tractor/pulling unit with mast in air cabled off as they left it years ago sn is on left brake houseing is am-3083-1 tires on front wheels are as big as back but has straight axle no fenders and has cable winches on each side up front its complete would like advice on how to get mast down with out it running and is it collectable?

i think what u have on that tractor is called a gen pole it's not a collectable they use them to remove submersiable pumps from wells i have one on my wc i made it to lift tractor motors and plows an stuff

Greg, i dont claim to know what you have or how it works. I assume the mast is something like a fork truck front end, or maybe you are talking about some type of front end loader frame. Anyway, the lift is either hydraulic or cable operated. Apparently it is in the riase position and has been tied off with a cable clamp? I would look closly at some way to use a comealong or chain fall to raise the fork/bucket up a couple inches to get slack in the cable. remove the cable clamp and maybe put a chain around it and attach with several inches of play. then slowly lower the comealong and drop the forks down. this assumes the "mast" is solid and taller than the forks/bucket, so you have something to lift up to. I might suggest starting off with building some shaffold out of 2 x 4 and planks to work behind the mast away from the forks/bucket and add some more to safety. Sure would like to see a photo of this thing you got. if the tires size is same front and back i wonder if it is a WD or more like a TL loader unit??

sorry I didnt explain a little more the mast is 30 ft in air has a pully at top and is tied off with cables in three directions it is cable operated by winches on each side of motor there is also a foot operated throttle on ground which is buy brakes and clutches up front right side of machine. problem is hasnt run in years if the machine is not collectible i can caveman it down which would in doubt tear up a lot of the original equip the mast also telascopes back and lays back over machine which rests less than a foot from stearing wheel its quite a mach in its time I still have not been able to figure what year it is but two people that have looked at it say its a allis chalmbers I am in process of borrowing a digital camera to get a picture its in the bottoms and no road to it thats why its all intact and parts not taken off or vandelized if possible I will post a picture thank you for reply

Pike County in Southern Indiana I have been told its a 1948 wd allis chalmers from serial # its sitting near a well and there is a stack of pipe beside it that was pulled with this machine then abanded quessing 20 plus years ago probley not to many around like this one if i can get mast down it could be moved hoping someone out there knows somthing about it

That number sounds like a casting No. Look for a smooth area between the LH brake spring hole and the brake spring adjusting bolt/locknut for a stamped serial number beginning with WD. That is if it is like the regular tractors. Also, look for a stamped number on the side of the block near the intake opening to the carb. If the number starts with WD, it's a 201 WD engine and if it starts with 45, it's a 226 WD-45 engine.
