When our service manuals call for usuing varnish on a gasket, what would you use. We have more modern metheds of sealers now.

I like to use contact cement. I cement the gasket to the removable side of what ever I'm sealing. I would seal the gasket to the waterpump and not to the block. That way if something goes wrong and I need to remove the gasket I just take it to the wirewheel and take it off.

I use a ton of Indian head, or tabers shelac on thin use. Then I also use a lot of permatex. I remember when I was a kid in the 60's, they recommended you could use it as a gasket. It does work like that in some cases. You want the non hardening type. Great for final drive covers. Dave.

Use The Indian Head Gasket Shellac That RB/CT recommended Or Another Excellent Product Is KW Copper Kote. Silicone Has Its Uses but a water pump gasket is not one of them.

Have used Indian Head Gasket Sealer before, reminds me of Shellac. Like Shellac, you will never get it apart without alot of work and scraping. Good Luck.

thin layer of oil proof RTV. i like the gold that is for O2 sensors, non vapor. it is better than the blue or red in my opinion.

Some places, Shellac is appropriate..!!

I see it designated a lot...not seen varnish called for very much..

A small bottle of Shellac will last ya a long time...

Thanks for correcting me, I meant shellac. Is it regular wood finishing shellac?

Specifically, oil pump gasket. Needs to be thin.
