I am wondering how to go about a block heater of some sort for a 1950 WD. I am curious what was used for cold weather starting. It is not uncommon to have -30 C here. I have built a 3 point hitch and picked up a blower but the few times I started the tractor it was a bit difficult. This tractor starts good in the summer but this is the first winter I have tried to use it.

I've used an electric distick before, worked well, + oil pressure comes up faster

This website has a photo ad of a WD w/engine block heater. Seller is listed as Andrew Stepanian 563-724-3386. Why don't you call him and try to find out how he did it?

Two common methods: Lower radiator hose heater that matches the hose ID, or a tank heater. Tank heater can be mounted on the left side of the engine. Remove the engine drain fitting, use that hole for the lower hose on the heater. Drill and tap a hole in the water manifold on the top of the engine for the other heater hose.

I don't think you will find enough room between the water pump and radiator tube to install an in-line heater.. You may be able to find a "Freeze-Plug" type heater that will fit, or just use a good magnetic pan heater.. I changed to 12V., and that solved any problems I had....!! Mine didn't turn very fast even in Summer, until I put in a 12V battery and 12v light bulbs..!! I still use the 6v coil, with a ballast resistor.

Or you could just use a lighter weight of oil. It will crank easier.

Well you could get one made to be put in the lower rad. hose or you could get a mag. heater the you put on the oil pan

Thanks, I have seen the splice in type for the lower rad hose, was just wondering if there was a factory or dealer method that was used on the machines originally. Peter

Hi again, I looked at the adds and found two for WD45's with block heaters. I contacted both sellers and asked how it was done. I will let all know what I find out. I like the water jacket idea but am somewhat leery to drill holes. The tractor is mag but starting system is 12V. Peter
