chance to buy a D-17 Series IV

I have an oppurtunity to buy a D-17 series IV with an AC loader. I am a Massey man by trade and do not know much about them I have been through this whole site and have figure out that givng 4000 for it is almost stealing it. It has new rubber on it and runs gerat it is Gas WF but has the hand clutch for live power which I am unsure about I am used to a two stage clutch. The only problem is that the guy said it did not move when he got it and he said that he adjusted the clutch and it works good now it feels fine too me as far as adjustment goes is there anything I am missing with this hand clutch high low thing? I am not familiar with this at all. Also I cannott find the Serial number where is it normally located? There a renot many posts in this site about the D-17 which leads me to beleive it is a good tractor and reliable, Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

My Father-in-Law was an Allis dealer. He said the D17 series 4 was the best tractor Allis ever made. His sold at estate auction for $7500, which was high. The price you stated seems fair to me. The only thing would be, does it have a 3pt hitch or snap couplers? With snap couplers the price is at the high end, with 3 pt its at the low end.

It is actually a Series III I have had some other problems which Pon ironed out for me and I have bought the tractor. It has the three point by the way

The 17's are a perfect size for a loader, and the hand clutch you are refering to is 2-stage wet clutch with high-neatrel-low on one lever. Giveing you 8 forword and 2 reverse gears.As for the seriel # sitting in the seat on the left side where the engine bolts to the trans. on the engine running up and down, usually covered under heavy paint is the tractor seriel #. Starts with D-17******.

I think that$4000 is almost to much. I have seen one like you are talking about go for $2600 and it had real go rubber. I have also seen one go for $2400 that was not so go tin but they both run fine.

Never seen a D17 seris [4] go for less than 3 grand. Where are these 24 to 26 hundred dollar series 4 at.Location does mean alot.
