Cracks between cylinders

Was cleaning off the Model B block I'm rebuilding and noticed a fine crack between each cylinder. I had previously knocked the sleeves out but the cracks don't look new. How bad off am I? The cracks are only on the top of the block.

Just like these guys say, if the cracks are at the top, DON'T worry. If at the bottom, Find another block. This also is common in the wc,wd, wd45, d-17, d-15. If the crack sticks up and spread apart, then maybe...

CH it's true you should be nervous for you'd rather not see such. But it would have been more unusual had you not seen them. They just go with the territory of those engines and they won't cause a bit more problem when you're through and know they're there than they did before when you didn't know they were there. They are of no legitimate concern.

I searched the archives and found the answer. Even looked at Dick L's crossbolt pictures. Cracks are narrow so I'm not sure if I'm going to crossbolt yet.

Think about those cracks. They are only at the top of the block. The orings seal the lower portion of the sleeve. The headgasket seals the top of the block. The bolts down from the head will keep the block from spreading. Everything was fine before you took it apart. Rarely can you find a B block that doesn't have those cracks. Being a wet sleeve engine they will not cause a problem unless a chunk is missing.

Thanks Paul,

You can see where it would make me a little nervous. I wouldn't want to pay to get the block dipped, crank turned, pistons and sleeves, bearings, seals, gaskets and paint not to mention time just to find I'm blowing bubbles or burning coolant. I've got another B to do after this one and don't want to waste time or $$$.

Don't worry about those cracks because 99% of those blocks are cracked on the top, if it is cracked in the lower end where the o-rings go then find another block. I have built several and have never had a leak, just spray the gasket with a heavy coat of copper spray a gasket let it tack up and bolt it together.
