I have a 1938 A-C WC with a leaking rear main seal. I have read that you can remove the oil pan to get to the bottom half of the oil seal. Has anyone replaced just the bottom half of the oil seal with good results? Can I replaced the top half without removing the engine? I do not want to pull the engine but I would really like to get this leak stopped or at least minimize it. Any tip you guys might have would help a lot. Thanks.

I pulled the engine on my C for a complete rebuild.

I noticed the real seal, made of cork, was schallaced in place.

The replacement seal is made from industrial felt.

I have a tool called a "Sneaky Pete" that is just a wire with a clip on the end that grabs the seal and pulls it around the top of the crank. You can also use this tool to clean out the groove where the seal goes, and you need to do a good job of this or it will leak. Lube the seal up with silicone and have someone turn the crank very slowly while you pull it around the top. (Pull the coil wire so the engine don't start.) I've had several people tell me it don't work but I did my WD and my brothers WF this way and neither one leaks a drop. I think you can get a Sneaky Pete at most any autoparts store.

Dave, I assume this method will work on my WC too? Thanks for the info.

See if you can determine exactly where the leak is. You can replace the cork seal at the rear of the oil pan, and maybe that is the only source of leacking. Nothing much lost by trying that first. The I&T manual shows that you can replace the FRONT seal by loosening the front engine cover, but to replace the rear main seal you need to remove the engine. I think archives, possibly by Dick L., shows a method to replace the rear seal, using a wire, but that might have been a C engine. My experience is that the rear seal fits very tightly, or should, but check archives for the other method. Again, not much lost by trying the simple fix first.

Found the story about using a wire to install a seal- I had printed it to keep as a reference. It is at fiveacrefarm@earthlink.net.

You might also check that the two small gaskets are under the sides of the rear main bearing cap. Lots of oil can run out under the cap if those are not in place. They should be in a pan gasket kit. HTH dan wc ne wyo.
